Threads of Attention

A workshop on writing and/as weaving with Vivian Sky Rehberg

Please join us for Threads of Attention, a two-day writing workshop with art writer, researcher, and educator Vivian Sky Rehberg, on Saturday 8 March and Saturday 15 March, 2pm–4.30pm.

Affinities between the written word and the spun cloth are interwoven in the shared Latin root—texere—of the words “text” and “textile.” These affinities have been explored by countless artists and writers, and are also beautifully conveyed in “Contacts,” Hana Miletić’s exhibition at the Walter & Nicole Leblanc Foundation. In two consecutive writing workshops, led by art writer and educator Vivian Sky Rehberg, participants will focus on writing and reading (of the exhibition, of texts, of social and spatial relations, of individual works of art) as modalities for threading our attention (to the sensory environment, interior experience, and to art). Hana Miletić’s “Contacts” serves as the point of departure for our development of textual description, narrative point of view, and our exploration of relationships between thinking, feeling, reading, writing, and looking. What lines of thought emerge when we persist with an experience of art, and what happens when we become distracted and our attention vanishes? How do we weave these moments of attention and inattention into our writing? These are some of the questions to which we’ll attend together.

The workshops are open to novice and experienced writers. Their purpose is to have a shared experience and conversation around writing and art. Participants will be encouraged to experiment with different writerly forms and concepts via writing prompts. The workshops will be conducted in English, however, participants are encouraged to write in whichever language they prefer.
